For all those that know me, I recently ran the Edinburgh Rock n Roll Half Marathon along with my friend Ange and some mad mum’s I know plus the 5,000 other people, who ended up in Holyrood Park on the wettest day of the year so far! With the help of all our friends and family, we managed to raise £590 for Yorkhill’s Childrens Hospital in Glasgow.
I ran for my wee friend Casey who has under-gone so many operations, tests, tablets and every heart prod under the sun. She is only three and is the bravest person alive on this planet that I know today.
It was a horrific day weather-wise but the cause we were running for and the enthusiasm for the event from other participants made sure we all crossed the finish line with our heads held high.
Here is a little poem I wrote for her as I send my cheque off to such a worthy cause.
CASEY’S HEART
We heard about your plight
And the kindness that you get,
From all the nurses and the doctors
In Glasgow, through the West.
We hear your heart is thriving,
It beats stronger every day,
So many heart ops – all those tests
For someone who’s just three.
We trained hard every day
Your smile etched in our minds,
What’s a wee run round Edinburgh?
For me, it was a climb!
We ran over 13 miles
Through some snow and then some hail,
It didn’t take us long though
As our thoughts were of Yorkhill.
Arthur’s Seat dead ahead
We made our way towards the finish,
Half-marathon done and dusted
Our batteries need replenished!
We’re so proud of all you have achieved
We’re sending pennies Yorkhill’s way,
They can continue to help more kids like you
to smile, to laugh and play.
